The Southwest

Map of states in the Southwest region of the United States

The Southwest, though it generally refers to only these four states, is of as much economic importance and as resourceful as any other region of the country. The climate is dry and warm. The region has short and dry winters. The population is less dense than any other region, but with strong Spanish-American and Native-American components it is one of the most diverse parts of the country. The Southwest, with its dry heat and mild climate has begun to rival the Southeast states in terms of the spot to relocate for retired people. The region has breathtaking landscapes including the tail end of the Rocky Mountains, the vast plains of Texas, The Colorado River, the Painted Desert, and the Grand Canyon. The region that was once only small towns and vast open lands has adapted, and dams and aqueducts now bring water to growing metropolitan areas and centers of commercial industry like Albuquerque, NM, Phoenix, AZ, and Las Vegas, NV.
